1 in 3 LinkedIn posts flops: the real distribution of virality

34.8% of LinkedIn posts get fewer than 10 likes. Only 14.4% break 100. Virality follows a power law — and that changes everything about how you post.

You publish, you get 12 likes, you wonder what you're doing wrong. The answer: probably nothing. You just ran into LinkedIn's real distribution.

In short

Across 359,000 LinkedIn posts measured, the engagement distribution is brutal:

→ 34.8% of posts get fewer than 10 likes — one flop in three → Only 14.4% break 100 likes → Median = 18 likes, but the top 1% hits 1,226 likes — 68 times the median

Virality is not a normal distribution. It's a power law: many quiet posts, a handful of breakouts.

Why "average" is lying to you

When someone tells you "a LinkedIn post averages 85 likes," they're lying by omission. That mean is inflated by rare viral posts. The typical post is the median: 18 likes.

| Benchmark | Likes | |---|---| | Median (the "normal" post) | 18 | | Mean (misleading) | 85 | | Top 10% (p90) | 151 | | Top 1% (p99) | 1,226 |

Look at the gap between the median and p99: a factor of 68. That's what a power law looks like. Your feed mostly shows you other people's p99 results — so you end up comparing your medians to their outliers. No wonder you feel behind.

What this actually means for you

1. Stop judging a single post by its result. A post at 12 likes is not a failure — it's the norm. Judge yourself on volume and consistency, not the next number that comes in.

2. Virality is built, not attempted. In the top 1% of viral posts, what keeps showing up is stacking: hook + proof point + long-form structure + open loop. Single-tactic posts rarely cross the threshold.

3. You can estimate your odds before you publish. That's exactly what the LinkPost virality score does — it positions your draft against 1M+ posts and tells you whether it has the profile of a post that breaks out or one that stays low. Try it free with the post analyzer.

How to move from the bottom to the top

You can't control luck, but you can control the signals:

→ write long and dense — longer posts have a higher median → open with a hook that creates expectation → anchor with a specific number (61% of viral posts contain one) → stack at least 4 tactics — don't bet everything on one

The distribution will stay hard. But by playing the right levers, you shift your posts to the right of the curve — where the 14% live.
